Walter Richard “Dick” Dodd, aged 85, passed away at his home in Cherry Hill, NJ, on Thursday, September 15, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Walter leaves behind his best friend and devoted wife of 64 years, Gloria Joyce (nee Morrison). He is also survived by his three children: Jennifer Diane Gregory (Daniel), Gretchen Emily Giebels (Timothy), and Richard Bruce Morrison Dodd (Tracie); eleven grandchildren: Alexandra Seeberger (Brett), Robert Gregory, Rachel Connelly (Sean), Luke Gregory, Noah Gregory, Beau Giebels, Joshua Giebels, Amanda Giebels, Isabella Dodd, Aubree Dodd, and Austin Dodd; two great-grandchildren: Ryan Edward and Nora Marie Seeberger; and his nieces and nephew, Mary Tessendorf (Jerry), Robin Zettlemoyer (Charles), James Dodd (Sherry), and Kristi O’Shaughnessy. He was predeceased by his parents Walter S. and Mary (Banyai) and older brother, Robert.
A native of Mt. Ephraim, Walter was born on February 8, 1937. He met Gloria at Audubon High School, class of 1955, where he enjoyed participating in football, basketball, and track. He fondly remembered going to States his senior year with Eugene Orowitz, aka Michael Landon, for track and field where he threw the shotput. After high school he served in the U.S. Army, First Infantry Division (the Big Red One) at Fort Riley, KS, for two years. He married and raised his family in Haddon Township, NJ, and from 1959 to 1988 he was an administrator at Boeing/RCA, in the Moorestown and Camden locations. At one point he lived in the Marshall Islands for a year and a half for his work at RCA.
Walt routinely ran marathons before being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1986. Retiring early allowed him to spend a lot of time with his young son and the highlight of his life was coaching Rich’s sports teams and attending his high school games. He was legendary for the statistical reports he compiled for the HTHS boys’ basketball teams and was very touched when Coach Ron Wister presented him with a varsity jacket for all his efforts. He enjoyed keeping up with his grandchildren’s lives as well as the lives of his nieces and nephew’s children.
Later in life Walt enjoyed his second home in Port St. Lucie, FL, where he swam and entertained his beloved poodle, Bo. A lifelong fan of classic country music and Philadelphia sports teams, watching Phillies games and preseason Eagles games occupied Walt in his last days.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Saturday, September 24, 2022 from 9:30am to 11:30am at Jackson Funeral Home, 308 Haddon Ave., Haddon Township, NJ 08108, where the funeral service will begin at 11:30am.
