Thomas Francis Moran

Thomas Francis Moran of Cherry Hill, N.J., formerly of Westmont, N.J., passed away peacefully on Jan. 1, 2023, at the age of 88. Tom was born to Irish immigrant parents in Jersey City, N.J. He joined the Air Force at the end of the Korean War and was stationed in France. He loved trains, trolleys (his father was a trolley driver), and planes. He followed his dream to be a “radio jock” and landed in Philadelphia at WIP/610 and later at WPEN. He said once, “My first love is my family, then broadcasting and then railroading.”

Tom started in broadcasting during 1959 at WCMC in Wildwood, N.J. He then moved to WCTC in New Brunswick, N.J., where he hosted a variety of shifts for four years. From 1964 through 1967, Tom worked at various radio stations in Philadelphia and New Jersey before joining legendary station WIP in Philadelphia hosting Saturday and Sunday programs as well as serving as Music Director. He later went on to do afternoon drive for many years for the AM powerhouse.

For 17 years, Tom was a mainstay on WIP with other legends like Ken Garland, Tom LaMaine and Bill “Wee Willie” Webber. In 2013, he was honored as the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia's “Person of the Year.”

He is survived by his dear friend and former wife Margaret “Peggy” Moran, of Westmont, N.J.; daughter Margaret DiNapoli (John), of Cherry Hill, N.J.; son Thomas Moran (Clarice), of Asheville, N.C.; daughter Colette Gaines (Don), of Cherry Hill, N.J.; and son Kevin Moran (Erin) of Audubon, N.J. Other survivors include: brother John A. L. Moran (Arlene) of Cerritos, C.A., and sister Maureen Duggan of Claregalway, Ireland. He is predeceased by his son Jeffrey Moran, sister Cornelia MacDonald and brother James Moran.

Tom was the proud grandfather of Jason (Kaitlin) DiNapoli of Clarksville, TN; Megan (Brett) Connolly of Conschohocken, PA; Katherine Moran of Asheville, N.C.; Matthew (Kahdijah) Gaines of Horsham, PA; Thomas (Rachel) Moran of Charlotte, N.C.; Timothy Gaines of Oaklyn, N.J.; Daniel Moran of Frisco, CO; Joseph Moran of Audubon, N.J.; and James Moran of Audubon, N.J. He also has five great grandchildren: John, Luke, Giulia and William DiNapoli of Clarksville, TN; and Hannah Connolly of Conschohocken, PA.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. at Jackson Funeral Home, 308 Haddon Ave., Haddon Township, N.J. and visitation on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish Holy Saviour Church, where his funeral mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. Interment Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill, N.J. In lieu of flowers contributions in Thomas’ memory may be made to St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 691 West Side Ave., Jersey City, N.J. 07304.
