It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our mother, Molly Mulvenna. She was born in Dungannon, Ireland. She immigrated almost 90 years ago aboard a ship with her brothers and mother to come to America. Her father, Vincent had come before them to find a decent job and a promising future for his family. She went to Visitation Elementary School in Philadelphia, then graduated from Little Flower High School. She organized a group of dear friends, who became her “sorority”. They became life-long friends and shared the joys and the challenges of family life.
After High School, Mom went to work at Curtis Publishing Company. It was during this time that she fell in love with our father, Bud Mulvenna. They were married for 68 years and saw the many fruits of their love in the family that came and grew up around them. She was, in many ways, a woman ahead of her time. She was fearless and had the courage and drive to do many new things. She went back to school and became a nurse when there were still 8 children living at home. She was an incredible nurse and loved working at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.
Our mother had many talents. We can all remember her beautiful singing voice. She sang in the choir at Holy Savior Church in Westmont for many years. Singing was always a great joy to her (and us) she also loved reading, knitting and traveling. After the ten of us were out of the house, she (and Dad) loved traveling and seeing new places. She encouraged the “sorority girls” to visit places they had never been. They all agreed that they would never have gotten anywhere if it hadn’t been for her. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and was able to travel there four times over her lifetime.
But most of all, she was a wonderful mother to us. She loved us, and we loved her back! She was not a complainer and was always grateful for anything we did for her. She could be so funny, and make us laugh. In later years, when her health declined, she still said she felt like a “16 year old” and was ready to go dancing. Also, our mother loved babies, and as the grandchildren and great grandchildren arrived, she experienced so much joy in them! During the pandemic, she loved seeing the babies on Facetime. Just a few weeks before her passing, she was able to see some of the youngest members of the family. Mom leaves a great legacy of love and we will miss her deeply. But we do take comfort that she had an incredible life’s journey, and that now, she is reunited with Dad, Ellen and Kathleen.
Due to the Pandemic, her funeral mass will be private.
