March 12, 1958 — December 30, 2025

Collingswood

Hey, what d’ya know, what d’ya say?

Larry Steen passed away at home on December 30, 2025, surrounded by love. He was holding the hands of his loving and dedicated wife, Mary Ellen O’Donnell and his big brother, Jack Steen.

Lawrence James Steen was born on March 12, 1958, to Fern and Theodore Steen of Barrington, NJ. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen O’Donnell, his children Lauren Gibson (Michael), Bill Steen (Bonnie) and David Steen (Kayla); his grandchildren, Michael, Jack, Owen & Ashton Gibson, Harbor, Crew & Seaona Steen and Theodore Lawrence Steen. He is also survived by his siblings Jack & Bonnie Steen, Ted & Cindy Steen and Patty Moser (Mark); Mary and the Stearne Family, the O’Donnell sisters, countless nieces, nephews and cousins; many friends including Michael Bartholomew, Cheryl & Denise, and Karen & Jim.

Larry grew up in Barrington, NJ where he attended St. Francis De Sales and Paul VI High School. In the early 80’s, he and his young family moved to the sandy shores of Sea Isle City where he found work as a carpenter and tile installer. He owned and operated Steen & Sons for many years, often employing the younger locals around town. He was “Dad” to so many, but only Lauren, Billy and Dave were lucky enough to call him theirs. He spent his life being their friend and coach and reveling in his role as both. Nothing made him prouder than his children…except his grandchildren. He lit up with them around and truly wanted more time to watch them grow.

Larry loved the outdoors. He was happiest with either a fishing rod or golf club in his hand. He made so many wonderful memories with family and friends “on the boat” and on the golf course. He was always ready for a good time! Larry loved music and passed his love of iconic bands on to his children such as Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan and many more…

Larry and Mel shared so many wonderful times together and were so blessed to find each other. They loved to travel to Florida and especially Mexico where he was proudly known as “Señor Larry.” They loved to cook together and dance in their kitchen. They spent warm sunny days on their deck where Larry would take care of his beloved chipmunks. He was always the charmer- making friends wherever he was!

Larry fought many medical battles in his life but always pulled through with grace and dignity. He was a fighter and believed that life was way too much fun to give up on. He always maintained a positive attitude and that “Steen Stubbornness” until the very end.

Please keep sharing stories of Larry and think of him when you dip your toes in the ocean or tee off at the golf course. To us, he will always stay Forever Young.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be private but we ask that if you feel the need to do something in his honor, donations may be made to a local rescue called Angels for Animals, 326 New Albany Road, #100, Moorestown, NJ 08057. Venmo: Angels-HelpingAnimals-1, Zelle: 856-979-3284.
