Obituary

Juan D. Gaia, M.D. July 13,1944 - March 5, 2026 “Lo que el mundo me ha dado, al mundo volvere.” [What the world has given me, to the world I will return.] (Jose Hernandez from Martin Fierro)

To live with unwavering compassion and generosity is not only remarkable, but perhaps the best use of this mortal gift called life. Juan Dario Gaia, known to thousands in the Greater Wilkes-Barre, PA area as Dr. Gaia, Radiologist, has left a proud legacy of the best of human traits.

Juan Gaia, as so many know, was born and raised in the lush Malbec wine region of Mendoza, Argentina. At the tender age of 10, showing great academic promise, Juan travelled miles by public bus to attend an English language academy. Finishing his secondary studies earlier than most, he took an avid interest in studying wine making at Liceo Agricola Y Enologico Domingo Faustino Sarmiento where he became a certified oenologist. A guaranteed successful future in the wine industry loomed, yet Juan was too impressed by his family doctor to ignore a different calling.

His focus shifted to medical school at Universidad Nacional de Cuyo and within a few years, Dr. Gaia landed in Pennsylvania as a board-certified diagnostic radiologist. His practice centered mainly in the Wyoming Valley, PA. From this point onward, the medical community observed his expertise, while his patients, friends and family witnessed a daily purposeful practice of open empathy, warm consideration, and inclusive fairness for everyone. Throughout his 50+ years of medical practice, Dr. Gaia’s normal week consisted of long days and 6-day workweeks. In 1991 and 1992, he served as President to the Luzerne County Medical Society. He served as Director of Ultrasound departments of both Misericordia University and Lackawanna College. Dr. Gaia also taught Radiology for TCMC. Over the years, he belonged to innumerable professional organizations and donated to and/or sponsored many non-profit enterprises in financial need.

Dr. Gaia took great pride in Valley Open MRI & Diagnostic Center, formerly of Kingston, PA, one of his many professional accomplishments. His staff, to a person, always noted his high quality of care, as well as his maintenance of an exceptional workplace environment.

Juan, the man - husband, father, grandfather, friend, filled his private life with quality relationships and activities. He loved to swim and did so up until the last months of his life. He was an avid reader, fly fisherman, and vintage car enthusiast. He loved conversation and had a natural way of connecting with people. He and his wife, Betty, traveled extensively all over the world. He was devoted to his children, guiding them with common-sense wisdom throughout their lives. They, in turn, kept him on his toes with their individual adventures. Juan’s bountiful patience and kindness was a parental gift to his family.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Juan G. and Ofelia Gaia.

He is survived by his loving wife and companion of 30 years, Betty (Saba); children Ryan, Joshua, Andrew, Benjamin (Allison); step-children Gina, Amy (Paul), Gary (Christine); grandchildren Kai, Aiden, Erisun, Magnolia, Luca, Penny; sister, Ofelia Gaia, Mendoza, Argentina.

Dr. Juan Gaia displayed a moral compass pointing true north. As one of Juan’s favorite authors, Jose Hernandez portrays in Martin Fierro, and which Juan demonstrated throughout his life, a person has a duty to be altruistic to his community and to be his true self to his friends. Hasta luego, amigo mio.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Juan’s memory may be made to Hope Pantry, 200 Emerald Ave., Westmont, NJ 08108.
