Passed peacefully with his family by his side on February 26, 2019, at the age of 78, of Mount Dora, FL.
Beloved husband for 55 years to Patricia (nee Wiehe). Loving father of Eileen Merrill (John) of New Milford, CT, Tom Barrett (Stefanie) of Keyport, NJ, Scott Barrett (Carolyn) of Haddon Township, NJ and Elizabeth Simpkins (David) of Springfield Township, NJ. Proud grandfather of Samantha, Sean, Jayde, Eimile, Shannon, Abby, Colin, and Aidan. Predeceased by his parents Robert and Anne Barrett and brother Gordon Barrett. Also survived by his siblings Robert, Michael, Christopher, Kevin, Teddy, and Kathleen.
Jim worked for the State of Connecticut, Juvenile Justice Division, as a Supervisory Probation Officer for 33 years. He was presented with the Liberty Bell Award for his work with at risk youth. His devotion to his family was without end and included coaching baseball/softball teams, being a Boy Scout troop leader, and was an active member in the high school football booster club. Upon his retirement he became a snow bird and relocated to Mt. Dora, FL. Jim became an avid golfer and enjoyed hitting the links regularly at Mt. Dora Country Club. He volunteered with Pat with Helping Hands and was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Jim enjoyed traveling, and some of his more enjoyable trips were to Ireland, Scotland, Germany, and England. Each summer he spent time with his children and grandchildren on Long Beach Island, NJ, where he could be counted on to tirelessly swim with the grandchildren, and to serve up the best pancakes and coffee on the Island. Sundays were always donut days and wherever he was he would surprise his grandchildren with their favorite donuts.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Visitation, Friday, March 15 th from 6-8pm at JACKSON FUNERAL HOME, 308 Haddon Ave., Haddon Township, NJ 08108.
Eulogy will begin 10:45 am Saturday, March 16th at Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish St. John's Church, 809 Park Ave., Collingswood, NJ.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am.
Interment will be private.
