Edward J. Sonzogni of Cherry Hill, NJ, formerly of Haddon Township, passed away unexpectedly in Ft. Myers, FL on Sunday, February 13, 2022, at the age of 85. Devoted husband of 64 years to the late Alice M. (nee Meech). Loving father of Joan Dowgin (Thomas) of Greeley, CO, Trish Garrity (William) of Jamesburg, NJ, Alice Turano (Mike) of Cape Coral, FL, and Lisa Rubin (Kenneth) of Upper Makefield, PA and the late Maryellen Stetz. Edward was the proud Pop Pop of Kaitlin Strode, Thomas M. Madden IV, Megan Wright, Elizabeth Achilles, Lisa Rossi, Matthew Dowgin, Ryan Madden, Kevin Hansen, James Dowgin, Benjamin Rubin, Erica Hansen and Phillip Rubin. He also had 7 great-grandchildren.
Ed/Eddie was born in Philadelphia and attended Northeast Catholic High School. He served in the Pennsylvania Air National Guard and was a coxswain rowing with his uncles for the Fairmount Rowing Club, winning a National Championship at age 13. He was a third-generation tile and marble layer and a life-long member of the Int’l Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. His craftmanship will forever live on in many residential and commercial buildings. Ed became a fitness buff after multiple work-related injuries and years of physical labor. He was a founding member of Bob Clark’s Gym and Bob’s Gym in Cherry Hill, often seen on the sun deck sunbathing.
He, along with Alice, were devoted to the Catholic church and were long-term parishioners of St. Joseph the Worker in Haddon Twp. He was a member of the Catholic Knights of St. George and Men of Malvern.
Ed’s most notable qualities were his big heart and his love of conversation! He spent hours on the phone with family members. Despite what he called chicken-scratch penmanship he wrote daily love notes left on the kitchen table or packed with Alice’s lunchbox. He always said she was the brains and he was the brawn and constantly commented on her beauty and brains. Special thanks to the residents and staff of St. Mary’s Villas in Cherry Hill who loved and supported him these past 6 months since losing his sweetheart. Ed was a proud Friend of Bill W’s for 45 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Tuesday, February 22 nd from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, Eulogy beginning 10:45 AM at Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, St. Vincent Pallotti Church, 901 Hopkins Rd., Haddon Twp., NJ. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM.
Interment Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill, NJ.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to The Phoenix (thephoenix.org) a national non-profit for people in recovery, an organization founded by Scott Strode, the husband of Ed’s granddaughter. It fittingly encompasses two out of three of Ed’s greatest passions: fitness and sobriety. The third being automobiles!
