Ed passed peacefully in the comfort of his daughter’s home on Saturday, July 24, 2021 of Oaklyn, NJ, formerly of South Philadelphia, at the age of 77. Loving husband of Shirley (nee Potter). Beloved father of Ed Gillen (Deanne) of Cherry Hill, NJ and Debbie Gillen (Jason Clarke & his son Griffin) of Haddon Township, NJ. Proud and adored Pop Pop of Grace Gillen, Emerson Gillen and Cara Gillen who were the light of his life. Dear brother of John Gillen of Cincinnati, OH, Donald Gillen (Rita) of W. Chester, PA, Dennis Gillen (Bernadette) of Ardsley, PA, the late Ann Fieger and brother-in-law of Tom Fieger. Also survived by many nieces & nephews.
Ed was an Insurance Agent for Philadelphia United and a Bartender at Cavanaugh’s in Philadelphia. He was a longtime past member of Pural Comic Club.
He loved animals, especially dogs, and always had a dog treat within reach. He is now reunited with his dogs Happy and Bear and his grandpup Mia who have been patiently waiting for him. He will be missed by his grandpups Lola and Landis.
Ed enjoyed reminiscing about growing up in South Philly, always had a great story to share, was a whiz at math, and always willing to lend a hand to others. Ed’s strong commitment to family started at a young age and continued throughout his life. He highly valued his relationship with his siblings and was proud of his nieces and nephews. He was a constant on the sideline of his children’s sporting events during their childhood and continued to support them through all of their endeavors in life. More recently, he was on the sidelines cheering on his granddaughters at soccer and tee-ball games. He deeply loved his wife and children but there is no denying that his favorite and most accomplished role in life was being Grace, Emme, and Cara’s Pop Pop.
