Bernie passed away peacefully, with his wife by his side on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 of Medford, NJ, at the age of 98.
Beloved husband of Jacqueline J. Reiley “Jackie” (nee Truster). Loving step-father of four children. Proud step-grandfather of ten children.
Bernhard was born in Munich, Germany in 1923. From age 14 to 16 he attended a vocational school for graphic art. During that time he also worked as an apprentice in an advertising firm in Cologne. After the Second World War Bernhard worked as a freelance artist for two chemical firms in Dusseldorf and Cologne. In 1955 Bernhard immigrated to the United States. During the first few years in the United States, he worked as a graphic artist for the DuPont Company in Wilmington, DE. From 1960 to 1987, Bernie worked for the Lutheran Church of America, starting out as a freelance artist and then becoming the art director and editor for The Lutheran Magazine. From 1987 to 1993 he studied watercolor with Millicent Allen. Bernie loved playing the guitar, harmonica, and bass with friends of Medford Leas and other local spots. He was a longtime member of the Sterling String Band. When not playing music he enjoyed sailing in the Barnegat Bay with his family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Gathering, Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021 from 2 to 4PM at the First United Methodist Church, 398 Bellevue Ave., Hammonton, NJ, where his memorial will follow at 4PM.
Interment will be private.
