Funk, Julia (nee Hesko) 96, of Egg Harbor City, NJ formerly of the Mayfair area of Philadelphia, and Westmont, NJ, died peacefully at home on June 15th, 2013.
As a perky young lady Julia loved to dance, especially to music played by “The Ramblers”, but was sad when the music ended. She solved that problem by marrying Jim, (Hudson Winterburn Funk) the bandleader. The music continued and she and Jim had two wonderful children. In 1984 Jim left to lead a bigger band in heaven. Julia remained here on earth for another 29 years to see to it that their children and grandchildren were nurtured and loved. Satisfied with her efforts, she slipped away peacefully on the 15th to once again enjoy Jim’s music.
Julia is survived and deeply missed by her children, Elaine Tatus (Richard) of Egg Harbor City, NJ and Jack Funk (Ann) of Wallingford, PA. and grandchildren Lisa Rivera (Angelo) of Linwood, NJ, Carole Almand (William) of Cape May Courthouse, NJ, Sherin Nardi (Russell) of Oaklyn, NJ, Dr. Margaret Wilkins of Reading, PA, John Funk (Nancy) of Coronado, CA, Kathleen Funk of Wallingford, PA, and JR Tatus of Laurel Springs, NJ.
Family, especially little children, were most important to Julia and, in addition to her 7 grandchildren, her 16 great-grandchildren and 1 gr-gr-grandchild brought her great joy for she was also a child in stature and demeanor. She was always ready to get down on the floor and play just like one of them. Until later years, Nana/Aunt Jules loved to dig in the garden and was always proud of her lawn. She was a feisty little thing with a very big, generous heart, always coming to the rescue to those in need, child or adult.
Also special to her were niece(godchild) Joan Switzer (Dennis) of Cumberland, VA, nephews Stephen Hesko (Theresa) of Churchville, PA. , The Rev. Daniel C. Hesko of Middletown, NJ and the late niece Barbara Coyle. Julia will be joining her husband, her mother Paulina Baran Hesko, father Szczepan Hesko and one brother, Walter Hesko at The Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Bridesburg area of Philadelphia.
This is the first year the annual Hesko “Miufka” is being held without the last of the offspring of the original Hesko immigrants being present.
Friends and family are invited to visit Thurs. June 20, 2013 at Jackson Funeral Home, 308 Haddon Ave., Westmont, NJ from 9:30-10:45 and to remain for a celebration of her life which will begin at 10:45. Mass will then be celebrated at Holy Savior Church, 50 Emerald Ave., Westmont, NJ at 12 Noon, immediately followed by grave side services at The Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, 4268 Richmond St., (Bridesburg section), Phila.
