We have lost a member of America’s Greatest Generation with the passing of Philip E. Sheaffer on January 1, 2013 at the age of 100. Philip served God and Country for a very long time. In his early adult years, he was active with the Primitive Methodist Church and Christian Endeavor in Philadelphia. After moving to NJ, he served God at the First Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ and later at the Dunellen (NJ) Presbyterian Church. During World War II, Philip served as a Chaplain’s Assistant with a mobile hospital unit of the 314th Infantry Regiment in France and Germany. His awards included the EAME Theater Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal. One of his greatest joys was returning home to his family for Christmas in 1945 after 18 days at sea crossing the turbulent North Atlantic. His working career included 43 years with Kemper Insurance in both Philadelphia PA and Summit NJ.
Philip was married to Pearl (nee Price) for 60 years before Pearl’s passing in 1995. His two sisters, Helen and Mildred (his twin), both passed many years ago. He is survived by his three sons Clifford (Joyce) of Earl NC, Richard (Bonnie) of Blue Bell, PA and Stanley (Patricia) of Haddon Township, NJ; his grandchildren Christine Walker (Will) of Haddon Township, NJ and David (Erika) of Upper Dublin, PA; and his seven great-grandchildren Aria, Alden, and Asher Walker and Rebekah, Timothy, Joshua, and Anna Sheaffer. He is also survived by his nieces Barbara Carpenter and Janet Secor and his nephew Donald Schwarzkopf. He will be dearly missed by all of us. A special joy was family and friends celebrating his 100th birthday with him last Feb. He loved seeing his model trains running once again and his high school snare drum. He was delighted to receive 170 birthday cards. He consistently expressed his contentment while living his final five years at Collingswood Manor.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation Friday from 9:30 to 10:30am at JACKSON FUNERAL HOME, 308 Haddon Ave., Haddon Twp., NJ, followed by his funeral service at 10:30AM. Interment Hillside Cemetery, Roslyn, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Fellowship Fund, Collingswood Manor, 460 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 or JAARS, PO Box 248, Waxhaw, NC 28173.
